Course Information
The Means are the End!
The quality of how we learn, in the process, builds the end we seek. Through a personal engagement in language use, to learn about the language itself and the people who speak it, we grow and consolidate competence at the advanced level, at a level where language is part of our life and we can be resourceful and independent to manage to use it in spite of not living in an English-speaking country!
The Books
- You do not have to purchase all of these books. Just one of the three for the Book Project.
- However, I also recommend you buy Emma Donoughue's tales and Ngozi's essay (about 6 euros), if you don't want to share my copies in the workshop.
- Mary Poppins is online in audio and written text. ESL Bits. Novellas (Relatos largos). If you want to know which paper copy you can buy, as there are five or so books, get the first one!
Kissing the Witch. Old Tales in New Skins (about 15 euros)
Thirteen tales are unspun from the deeply familiar, and woven anew into a collection of fairy tales that wind back through time. Acclaimed Irish author Emma Donoghue reveals heroines young and old in unexpected alliances--sometimes treacherous, sometimes erotic, but always courageous. Told with luminous voices that shimmer with sensuality and truth, these age-old characters shed their antiquated cloaks to travel a seductive new landscape, radiantly transformed.Cinderella forsakes the handsome prince and runs off with the fairy godmother; Beauty discovers the Beast behind the mask is not so very different from the face she sees in the mirror; Snow White is awakened from slumber by the bittersweet fruit of an unnamed desire. Acclaimed writer Emma Donoghue spins new tales out of old in a magical web of thirteen interconnected stories about power and transformation and choosing one's own path in the world. In these fairy tales, women young and old tell their own stories of love and hate, honor and revenge, passion and deception. Using the intricate patterns and oral rhythms of traditional fairy tales, Emma Donoghue wraps age-old characters in a dazzling new skin.
We Should All Be Feminists (about 6 euros)
I would like to ask that we begin to dream about and plan for a different world. A fairer world. A world of happier men and happier women who are truer to themselves. And this is how to start: we must raise our daughters differently. We must also raise our sons differently
What does feminism mean today?
In this personal, eloquently argued essay adapted from her much-admired Tedx talk of the same name Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie offers readers a unique definition of feminism for the twenty-first century, one rooted in inclusion and awareness. Drawing extensively on her own experiences and her deep understanding of the often masked realities of sexual politics, here is one remarkable authors exploration of what it means to be a woman now an of-the-moment rallying cry for why we should all be feminists.
